New MMDA chair wants agency to 'go back to basics'

"Back to basics." This, together with the strict enforcement of the law, is how newly-appointed Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Danilo Lim says he plans to improve Metro Manila's terrible traffic situation.

Prior to Lim, the MMDA was headed by agency general manager and officer-in-charge Tim Orbos. The former Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) general and Bureau of Customs (BOC) deputy commissioner marked his first day heading the MMDA by calling for an audit of the agency's equipment, vehicles and personnel.

The new chairman added that he would look into previous contracts and transactions the agency was involved in, also pledging to stamp out corruption within the MMDA by disciplining its employees. "I ask for the support and cooperation of everybody. I am not here to make anybody’s life difficult. Let us all work together for a better Metro Manila," he said during a meeting with MMDA officials and directors.

With all the confusion surrounding the recent implementation (and swift suspension, by the way) of the Anti-Distracted Driving law, maybe a thorough review of the "basics" is exactly what's needed. Needless to say, Lim definitely has a tall task ahead of him.
