Have you passed through EDSA this workweek? If so, then chances are you’ve witnessed how the operations of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has affected the traffic situation along the notorious thoroughfare—whether you were riding a private vehicle or public transport.

CNN Philippines got in touch with MMDA special operations commander Bong Nebrija earlier today to ask about the traffic situation along EDSA. You can check out the full interview here:

The agency recently deployed multiple enforcers on the ground to strictly implement the ‘yellow lane’ policy along the whole stretch of EDSA. This has reportedly worsened traffic for both public and private vehicles since yesterday.

“It was hard because they literally occupied the whole lanes of EDSA, and of course, in doing so, in funneling them back to the yellow lane, there are private vehicles who got stuck in the process,” Nebrija explained in his interview.

Muntinlupa congressman Ruffy Biazon uploaded a short video on his Twitter account, which clearly showed how the redirection of these public buses greatly affected private vehicle lanes. Take a look:

What added to the problem was the confusion regarding the lane policy for provincial buses. In a list of guidelines posted on the MMDA website, one sentence reads: “Provincial buses are also not allowed to use the yellow lane. Instead, they are encouraged to use the third lane.” However, during the agency’s recent operations, provincial buses were reportedly forced into the yellow lanes, which further worsened the congestion.

Today, August 7, is also supposedly the first day of the provincial bus ban’s voluntary dry run. However, Nebrija said that only 24 out of the expected 1,000 buses participated during the trial. This also resulted in more buses plying EDSA than what was initially anticipated.

Consequently, these recent events have caused a public outroar on social media. Do a quick search on Twitter and you’ll find hundreds of complaints from netizen commuters regarding the MMDA’s recent operations. We’ve embedded some of them below:
