Merry Christmas to all the illegal parkers out there: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has just announced that effective December 19, 2018, the fines for illegal parking and obstruction will increase—and by a great deal at that.

Below are the new rates:

  1. Illegal parking (attended vehicle) – from P200 to P1,000
  2. Illegal parking (unattended vehicle) – from P500 to P2,000
  3. Obstruction – from P150 to P1,000

Yes, you read that right. The fine for illegally parked cars has more than tripled, while the fine for obstruction has increased sixfold. Again, the higher fines for the aforementioned traffic violations will be implemented starting tomorrow, December 19. The changes were already published in two major newspapers on December 12, and have already been registered with the Office of the National Administrative Register of the UP Law Center.

And there’s more: The MMDA also added that perpetrators can be issued a maximum of two citations per day, provided there is a three-hour interval in between issuances.

Yikes. Twice a day, with those rates? This will be a big blow to car owners who have made a habit out of turning side streets into personal parking areas. If you’re one of them, you know what your New Year’s resolution should be. You might want to think twice about where you leave your vehicle now.
