Remember last year when Pasig City first designated Emerald Avenue as a car-free zone on Sundays? Just over six months later, the local government has established more People’s Streets—thoroughfares that are closed off to vehicular traffic on Sundays, and converted into an outdoor space where people can exercise, play, or just chill.

There are now five People’s Streets in Pasig City, and we’ve listed their car-free hours below:

1) East Bank Road

Mangahan Barangay Hall to Alfonso Street
Every Sunday, 6am to 6pm

2) Emerald Avenue

6am of Saturday until 9pm of Sunday

3) Caruncho Avenue Westbound

SPED Linear Park to M.H. del Pilar Street
Every Sunday, 6am to 6pm

4) M.H. del Pilar

San Nicolas Barangay Hall to Elpidio Angeles Street
Every Sunday, 6am to 12nn

5) Lopez Jaena Street

Every Sunday, 6am to 6pm

Even during the pandemic, Pasig City has continued to make improvements that benefit different road users. Ortigas Avenue and Emerald Avenue got better lighting, the once-dilapidated Jenny’s Overpass received an overhaul, and the Kapitolyo intersection now features bike boxes. Given Metro Manila’s lack of public parks and car-free outdoor areas, the People’s Streets initiative could be adopted by other local government units to provide locals and visitors alike a safe space for leisure activities.

Any other streets you think could be turned into car-free zones on weekends?
