One of the many hot-button motoring issues of 2017 has been the government's PUV modernization program. Many arguments have been put forward both in favor and against it from different sides of the fence. Now, it appears we won't have to wait long to see it all finally go down.
According to a report by Rappler, Department of Transportation (DOTr) undersecretary Tim Orbos confirmed yesterday that the phaseout of deteriorated public transport vehicles will start in January. Take note that the modernization program encompasses buses, jeepneys, and public utility vans.
"Ang layunin ay tuparin 'yung sinabi ni presidente na by January, sisimulan tanggalin ang mga bulok na sasakyan. Uunahin 'yung public transportation [vehicles] that is the start of the modernization program," Orbos said. He also added that motor vehicle inspections will also start next year, courtesy of the Land Transportation Office (LTO).
This announcement is sure to incite a lot of reactions from the public. Many have said that a program like this has been long overdue and will be good for commuters. Some transport groups, meanwhile, have accused the government of acting against the interests of the drivers and operators who will be affected by such a change.
