Could additional reinforcements for the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) help solve our capital’s traffic nightmare? At least one senator seems to thinks so.

In a press release posted on the Philippine Senate website earlier today, Senator Ralph Recto said hiring more traffic-management personnel should be a priority. The official also backed the traffic agency’s appeal for more funding and authority to do exactly that.

The Senator emphasized the need for “round-the-clock and rain-or-shine” MMDA personnel, as well as an “active night brigade,” to help the agency cope with the number of roads it needs to cover and the increasing number of vehicles.

Recto also pointed out the increasing number of road accidents, saying: “With this epidemic in road crashes, we need more men to come to the aid of the injured and clear the road of obstructions."

He added that if government rules do not permit the MMDA to utilize its internally generated income, “then it must be allowed to tap a portion of the P168 million it collects in traffic and littering fines annually—specifically for the hiring of more personnel.”

According to the Commission on Audit (COA), the agency has 2,955 permanent employees, seven presidential appointees, 18 co-terminus employees, 32 consultants, and 7,077 casual, temporary, project-based and ‘job order’ employees. Do you think the MMDA could use a boost in manpower, too?
