The European Commission has provisionally approved plans to place speed limiters on all new cars sold in Europe from 2022 onwards. Called the ‘intelligent speed assistance’ (ISA) system, the feature will become mandatory along with a raft of other safety systems, including advanced emergency braking, lane-keep assistance, and black box data recorders that will provide information in the event of an accident.
The ISA system will use both GPS data and sign-recognition technology to check speed limits, and will then automatically keep the car running below the maximum speed. However, drivers will be able to override this by pressing firmly on the accelerator.
The UK Department for Transport has also confirmed that the UK will adopt the same measures, whatever the outcome of Brexit.
The European Commission has stated that it expects the safety systems to help save over 25,000 lives and avoid at least 140,000 serious injuries by 2038—although the legislation will still need formal approval from the European Parliament and Council.
