Bus operator fined P462,000 for overloading, breaking social-distancing guidelines

Here’s a good reminder for all the bus operators out there: Stick to the maximum passenger count and follow social-distancing guidelines, or else you could end up paying a very hefty fine.

One Metrolink bus recently found this out the hard way, after the local government fined it a whopping P462,000 for overloading and not adhering to social-distancing protocols during trips. Valenzuela City mayor Rex Gatchalian posted a photo of the violation receipt on Facebook earlier today. Look:

“Metrolink bus just paid their fine. So mga bus operators out there, I suggest you toe the line or you [will] suffer the same fate,” Gatchalian warned.

The bus operator paid the fine, sanctioned the erring drivers and conductors, and, what’s more, got creative in ensuring its vehicles would adhere to social-distancing regulations during trips by removing the option of overloading completely. Gatchalian also added that he would be getting in touch with another violator, this time a public jeepney, reported by a constituent. Yesterday, the mayor encouraged Valenzuela City residents to take photos of and report incidents of overloading and non-adherence to safety practices.

“Metrolink was given one last chance to shape up,” Gatchalian said on social media. “But what they did cost them P462,000 na fine. So, if may ibang bus operators na gustong gumaya…”

Not a good look for the bus operator at all. Was the extra fare the violating bus collected worth the massive P462,000 fine? Chances are the answer is no.

Guys, if you happen to board any form of public transportation that refuses to get in line with new normal guidelines, do take a photo and report them to authorities. People’s lives literally depend on it. Remember: All of us—commuters and operators alike—should be in this fight together.
