Late last year, the Philippine Land Transportation Office (LTO) issued Memorandum Circular (MC) 2018-2158, which set guidelines for private motor vehicle inspection center operations.
Under the MC, vehicles weighing over 4,500kg will be charged an inspection fee of P1,800 and a re-inspection fee (to be charged if the vehicle fails the initial inspection) of P900. Motorcycles, meanwhile, will be charged P600 and P300 for inspection and re-inspection, respectively.
Now, a member of the Philippine Senate is questioning the move, saying the higher fees did not go through public consultation.
Senator Grace Poe recently questioned the LTO, saying the agency should take into consideration the plight of the Filipinos.
“The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) should go slow, if not shelve this plan because it will be carried out without listening to the views of the affected motorists and other sectors,” Poe said.
“Before it imposes new fees, the LTO should first heed the basic traffic rule: Stop. Look. Listen. Puro pasakit na lang sa taumbayan,” Poe added.
