Porsche has decided to adapt the technology in the 911 GT3 R Hybrid into the body of the 918 Spyder concept car to come out with the 918 RSR mid-engine coupe.

Essentially a motorsports version of the 918 Spyder, the 918 RSR utilizes the V8 engine of the successful RS Spyder race car, which was further developed to now produce 563hp. The electric motors on the front wheels each produce 75kW (100hp) for a combined total of over 150kW (200hp), pushing the 918 RSR's power output to 767hp. Whew! This additional power, which is generated during braking, is stored in an optimized flywheel accumulator, similar to the one used in the 911 GT3 R Hybrid.

Translating the power to the 918 RSR's wheels is a six-speed constant-mesh transmission based on the one used by the RS Spyder race car and is operated by toggling the two shift paddles mounted behind the steering wheel.

The 918 RSR's design was inspired by the 908 long-tail coupe and the 917 short-tail coupe, with flowing lines dominated by muscular wheel arches, dynamic air intakes and a pulpit-like cockpit. A fan wheel visible between the ram air intake tubes and a rear spoiler inspired by the RS Spyder emphasizes the car's role as Porsche's racing laboratory while the "liquid metal chrome blur" color underscores the curves of the 918 RSR. The German carmaker's hybrid orange color on the brake calibers and the body's longitudinal stripes adds the final touches to the 918 RSR.

"We are back in Detroit with a clear message: Porsche further extends its competencies when it comes to performance and efficiency," said Porsche AG president and chief executive Matthias Mueller. "The Porsche 918 RSR impressively demonstrates the passion of our engineers and designers for developing the world's most advanced and best looking sports cars."
