We’re only one race into the current Formula 1 season, but a lot of us are looking forward to next year already. In case you’ve been living under a rock and you don’t quite understand why just yet, well, get this: Fernando Alonso just announced that he will be returning to F1 next year.
The Spaniard has been confirmed as part of the Renault DP World F1 Team for the 2021-2022 season. This return marks Alonso’s third stint with the team, a team with which he won his two world titles in 2005 and 2006.
“Renault is my family, my fondest memories in Formula 1 with my two World Championship titles, but I’m now looking ahead. It’s a great source of pride and with an immense emotion I’m returning to the team that gave me my chance at the start of my career and which now gives me the opportunity to return to the highest level,” said Alonso.
“I have principles and ambitions in line with the team’s project. Their progress this winter gives credibility to the objectives for the 2022 season and I will share all my racing experience with everyone from the engineers to the mechanics and my teammates. The team wants and has the means to get back on the podium, as do I,” the two-time F1 champion added.
We have more than a handful of races left with this current season before we see the 38-year-old Alonso suit up to hit the track once again. Nevertheless, we’re excited. What say you? What do you make of Alonso’s return to F1 and his reunion with Renault?
