If you\'re one of those who\'d like to relive the good old days of rallying using a rear-wheel-drive sports car, Toyota Motorsport GmbH has heard your prayers. The Japanese carmaker\'s Europe-based motorsport arm has confirmed that it will produce a rally car based on the Toyota 86 sports coupe.
Known as the TMG GT86 CS-R3, the rally car will be built according to R3 specifications, which means it will be equipped with a six-speed sequential gearbox, limited-slip differential, modified engine, adapted brakes and other upgrades.
In developing the car, TMG drew on its experience in building the 86 it fielded for the Nurburgring-based VLN endurance series, with the rally car reportedly being modified \"to the maximum level permitted within the regulations.\"
Last year, we went to TMG headquarters in Cologne, Germany, and saw the TMG GT86 CS-V3 race car in the metal.
According to TMG, the GT86 CS-R3 is targeted at private customers and is eligible for all FIA-sanctioned rallies, \"up to and including the World Rally Championship.\"
Full specifications and pricing of the car will be announced in the coming months, with delivery of the vehicles expected for the 2015 season.
\"Rallying is in our blood at TMG, so it is very exciting to announce that we will be expanding our rally operations,\" said TMG customer motorsport principal engineer Nico Ehlert. \"The GT86 CS-R3 promises to be a thrilling car on the rally stages. With rear-wheel drive, we can expect some dramatic action that is sure to be entertaining for drivers and fans alike. We expect demand to be high so we are looking forward to seeing a lot of GT86 CS-R3 rally cars in action from the beginning of the 2015 season.\"
