Rolls-Royce Motor Cars sold 3,538 of its vehicles in 2011, making it the English carmaker's best-ever 12-month period in terms of sales in its 107-year history. It topped its 1978 record when Rolls-Royce sold 3,347 cars.

Rolls-Royce credits last year's strong sales with growth in the Asia Pacific, Middle East and North America markets at 47 percent, 23 percent and 17 percent, respectively. The brand also performed well in its home market as it registered a 30 percent growth. China and United States were its most significant individual markets.

"We had an outstanding year in 2011 and we should take a moment to reflect on this Great British success story," said Rolls-Royce chief executive Torsten Müller-Ötvös. "Our business is in excellent shape. We are developing our dealer network, moving into new markets like South America, expanding our manufacturing operation in West Sussex to meet global demand and have plans to develop our product range. At the core of this extraordinary success is a dedicated, committed and, above all, passionate workforce."

Numerous orders for its Ghost models were also requested with custom-made trim that, according to the carmaker, created many exceptional examples across the model range.
