SSC puts Tuatara engine through dynamometer test

SSC, the carmaker that--for three years--held the world\'s fastest production car speed record with its Ultimate Aero, is getting to ready to reclaim the recognition once again. The boutique carmaker has just finished dyno-testing the twin-turbo V8 engine of the Tuatara, the successor to the Ultimate Aero. And its power output reportedly surpasses that of the current record holder, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.

With the major assembly development of the Tuatara supposedly entering its final phases, SSC has just completed the final testing and validation of the car\'s engine package on the dynamometer. According to SSC, the Tuatara\'s 7.0-liter powerplant \"passed all project specifications with flying colors\" with an output of 1,350hp and 1,735Nm. The carmaker even claims that the tests showed the engine \"is easily capable of over 1,700hp for those owners that don\'t want or need to be buffered by regulations.\"

In comparison, the Veyron Super Sport\'s quad-turbo W16 engine \"only\" produces 1,001hp and 1,250Nm.

\"This is a proud moment for all that were part of the engineering team on this project,\" said SSC founder Jerod Shelby. \"This amazingly versatile package has already shown that it can easily be driven on a daily basis in any climate or environment in the world and at the same time can roll out of the pit area onto a track like Nurburgring and easily handle any rigors that record will require.\"

More than just testing the engine\'s power output, SSC also tested its durability by running it at full load at 5,500rpm for five minutes while all the internal and external facets of the engine were data-logged. At the five-minute point, the engine was dropped back to idle for 30 seconds to let the exhaust valves cool, and then immediately ramped back up to 5,500rpm for another five minutes.

\"Even if it were possible to climb a steep and constant hill at 440kph, with the aerodynamic drag that would be associated with that speed, you would never see the kind of load we are testing our engines at,\" added Shelby. \"I\'ve never personally seen exhaust headers glow orange-red for that long period of time. I was waiting for metal to start dripping on the floor. But not only did metal not turn to liquid during the grueling testing, the engine was torn down for internal inspection when all testing was completed, and every component still looked brand-new. The Tuatara is going to be an exciting car that redefines the supercar industry.\"
