Some of us are very particular about the air we breathe inside a vehicle. One whiff of poisonous plastic, carbon monoxide, the wrong car perfume, or even foul body odor can instantly ruin an otherwise pleasant ride.

The worst part? We look like we’re borderline obsessed with air quality when no one else can catch the scent we’re complaining about. But it’s there—our noses know it.

If you can relate, maybe the next car you buy should be a Hyundai. The Korean car manufacturer has developed a Smart Air Purification system as a response to growing concerns about what our lungs take in inside our cars.

“Enabling our customers to breathe the cleanest air, even in highly polluted areas, is a demonstration of how Hyundai Motor Group strives to care for its customers,” Yong Suk Shinhead of the FR interior and exterior system engineering design team says. “This innovation is just one of many projects we are working on to provide our customers with the best in-car environments.”

So, how does it work? An automated monitoring system with a laser-based sensor keeps tabs on the cabin’s air quality until it receives an ‘excellent’ rating. It achieves said rating via a filtration system that removes ‘fine particulates’ before passengers enter the car, and continues to purify the environment throughout the drive. You can also monitor air quality via the infotainment screen and a 16-bar display that shows real-time readings.

The main advantage of its setup, Hyundai claims, is that it does its work constantly, adding that other systems turn off after a designated time regardless of the air quality.

“It then maintains the cleaning process until the air quality improves to an ‘Excellent’ level. Even if the exterior air quality is at ‘Poor’ level, the system can purify air inside to ‘Excellent’ quality in almost instantaneously,” Hyundai says.

Hyundai adds that its Smart Air Purification system is already being considered for future Hyundai and Kia vehicles. Is this a feature you would like to see in other brands as well?
