Subaru has announced that it will roll out the next generation of its EyeSight advanced driving-assist system to its new models in 2014. This comes just a few days after its current-generation EyeSight-equipped models--the Legacy sedan and the Outback wagon--topped the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety\'s first-ever frontal crash-avoidance test program.

According to the Japanese carmaker, the next-generation EyeSight has a revamped stereo camera system that features color recognition technology \"combined with an approximately 40% increase of viewing angle and visibility distance, expanding visible range and improving object-recognition accuracy.\" The updated system is also supposedly able to recognize brake lights and red signals.

A new feature of the next-generation EyeSight is its active lane-keep system, which has two functions.

One is lane-keeping assist, which recognizes the lines on both sides of the lane and helps keep the vehicle in the middle through the use of steering assist controls. The other function is the lane departure prevention assist, which applies force to the steering wheel \"to suppress the deviation if the vehicle almost strays over the lane lines...to further reduce the burden of driving.\"

Furthermore, with the color recognition technology of the stereo camera, EyeSight can supposedly detect the brake lights of the vehicle ahead and, linked to the adaptive cruise control, allow for even faster deceleration compared to the current system.

The next-generation EyeSight system will be employed on Subaru\'s new vehicles scheduled for release in 2014 before it is rolled out to all models sequentially.
