If I'm to liken popular TV host Wally Bayola to a non-living thing, it will probably be a light bulb. I can’t help notice his face brighten up every time our discussion shifts to motorcycling. He really loves the topic.
Wally treats his present bike, a Suzuki GSX-S1000, seriously. It’s his daily shuttle from house to work even if it means surviving hot weather, rain, and traffic. “Nakatatanggal ng stress. Tahimik ang kapaligiran kapag ikaw lang ang nagra-ride. Naririnig mo lang ang ihip ng hangin, tunog ng makina,” says the 45-year-old comedian. “It’s a very compelling moment,” he added.
With or without traffic, Wally rides his Gixxer to Eat Bulaga! every day. When caught in a gridlock, he waits patiently, acknowledging that big bikes were not made to weave in and out of traffic. What about the clothes that he needs for his TV appearances? His driver would bring them to the studio in a car.
Standing around 5’2,” Wally tiptoes on his Gixxer with its towering 31.9in seat height. He’d rather stay on the safe side in traffic by waiting for a good opening up front, rather than take the risk of squeezing his big bike in between vehicles. Even though he rides a naked bike that spews 139hp, he describes himself as a defensive rider.
He is also a big fan of Suzuki motorbikes. This Bicolano has owned a Suzuki Bandit before going all-in on a GSX-S1000.
Eat Bulaga! viewers can’t forget the episode when his show character, Lola Nidora, rode his stallion alongside passenger jeepneys and pedicabs while chasing the Kalyeserye love team of Maine Mendoza and Alden Richards, who were then on the verge of ‘eloping.’
When he started riding motorbikes six years ago, Wally was more of a weekend rider. Despite enjoying solo rides, he makes sure he also spends time for group rides. Wally belongs to the RAM Riders Group led by retired Army General Danny Lim, now chairman of the MMDA. He often rides with members of the PNP-Highway Patrol Group (HPG) and his constant riding buddy is Freddie Efectio, an instructor of the HPG rider training course.
“Safety rider ako. Pag-ratratan, okay ako. Pero kapag mag-isa ako, sigurista ako,” says Wally.
Before, his Eat Bulaga! family was worried about Wally, saying that motorcycling is dangerous. But Wally assures everyone that 'Lola Nidora' knows best.
Ride safe, Wally!
