The Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe is a retro take on a modern motorcycle

Old school done right

Here at Top Gear Philippines, we've always had a soft spot for retro designs. This passion isn't just limited to four wheels either, as our appreciation for old school aesthetics extends well into the realm of motorcycles as well.

Take the recently unveiled Kawasaki Z900RS Café for example. The motorcycle is one of the Japanese bike manufacturer's highlights at the ongoing Esposizione Internazionale Ciclo Motociclo e Accessori (EICMA) in Milan, Italy, and it features one of the most eye-catching designs at the show.

The Z900RS Café is basically, well, a retro version of the well-received Kawasaki two-wheeler, endowed with a sportier riding position, aesthetic enhancements, and a more laid back, classic finish. The drop-style handlebar is lower, and it comes in a bold lime green paint job with an exhaust that comes in an attractive brushed satin finish. Plus those multi-spoke cast wheels fit in perfectly. Our favorite bit though has to be that retro LED headlamp.  All this traces its roots back to 1972's Super Four model Z1, Kawasaki says.

Of course, this bike is more than just about looks. It packs a 948cc in-line four engine capable of 109hp and up to 98.5Nm, as well as a six-speed transmission. It's also made from a lightweight tubular frame and comes with traction control.

Kawasaki Motors Europe director Morihiro Ikoma expressed his satisfaction over the finished products, saying it might have taken the brand some time to enter the classic scene, but the wait was well worth it. "The Z900RS CAFE and Z900RS have a unique heritage and an authenticity that sets them apart as the genuine article."
