It looks like the guys in orange are cooking up something quite special over there in Austria: KTM has just unleashed its newest sports bike, set to roll off the production lines early next year.
Ladies and gents, have a gander at the all-new KTM 990 RC R prototype. This is a road-homologation supersport, the first from KTM since it discontinued the RC8 in 2015. The new 990 RC R, according to KTM, was brought to life by “harnessing all expertise” gained through MotoGP.

The 990 RC R is powered by the next-generation twin from KTM, the LC8c. It’s said to put out a total of 126hp to go along with 103Nm at 10,500rpm and is mated to a traditional shifter that can be reversed to race-shift as standard.
The bike has a front weight bias and features a steel frame with enhanced stiffness for better handling and road feel, and it gets a diecast aluminum subframe for a better overall ride. It sits on light cast-aluminum wheels shod in Michelin tires. KTM has also paid close attention to ergonomics, enabling six contact points on the tank for “better connection, leaning, and tucking in.”
KTM has also come up with a 990 RC R Track edition, a version that strips away road-legal essentials and adds protective components and fine-tune adjustments including a full exhaust system. These modifications supposedly ensure that riders “focus on lap times rather than leisurely rides.” It really sounds like this thing will be beast.
Again, the all-new 990 RC R will be unveiled in all its glory sometime in 2025. KTM is releasing a multi-part BTS documentary about the R&D of this new supersport bike, though, so that’s something you can keep an eye out for while you sit on your hands and wait for the full reveal.
