The Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers in the Philippines (CAMPI) said car sales dipped in April "due to unavailability of stocks for some models."

CAMPI's data, which includes sales from 16 car and truck companies, showed that April 2011 sales stood at 11,816 units, down 4.5 percent from 12,374 units sold in the same month last year.

April sales were also 14.2 percent lower than that posted in March, when CAMPI members sold a total of 13,775 units.

CAMPI president Elizabeth H. Lee said, however, that the Philippine car industry is still within its forecast range as sales in the first four months of the year are still 4.7 percent higher than the sales made in the same period in 2010.

CAMPI is currently expecting to sell 175,000 vehicles this year but Lee said adjustments may be made as the March 11 disaster that shook Japan continues to affect the automotive supply chain.

"Although some key parts suppliers' plants have resumed operations, they have yet to operate at normal levels," Lee said. "Hence, demand will continue to outpace supply temporarily as plants try to ramp up operations to higher levels at the soonest time possible."

Local car assemblers are already starting to feel the impact of the supply shortage from Japan. Mitsubishi and Toyota have trimmed their workweek to three days from the normal five. Honda, on the other hand, is producing 50 percent below capacity.

"We continue to be cautiously optimistic," Lee said. "We continue to monitor the situation as we work with our principals on temporary solutions to help mitigate the impact and shorten the gap so operations can scale up to normal levels at the soonest time possible."
