While it'll be months, or perhaps even close to a year, before we get the Aveo, Chevrolet is already teasing us with the car's hot hatch version, which will debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

Known as the Sonic in the United States, this particular Aveo will carry Chevrolet's RS badge (short for Rally Sport) and pack a 1.4-liter, 138hp Ecotec turbo engine--making it the only model in its segment to carry a turbocharged powertrain.

Inspired by the look of the Sonic RS Concept that debuted at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, the production version of the Sonic RS carries the concept car's dramatic front fascia, which has a deep air dam design that enhances the car's road-hugging stance. Helping reinforce the wide and low stance of the car are the vertical intakes at the edges of the front fascia, which also houses the fog lamps.

Other features in the Sonic RS that you won't find in the standard Sonic are the grille, rear fascia and spoiler, new rocker moldings, a retuned sport exhaust with chrome outlet and unique 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels.

The sporty theme of the Sonic RS continues in the interior with the new front sport seats, thick-rimmed sport steering wheel with its racing-inspired flat-bottom design, new shift knob, aluminum sport pedals, specific instrument panel cluster graphics and RS-specific interior trim color for the instrument panel and door trim inserts.

What stands out in the RS interior though is its Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system that allows the car's occupants to bring their customized music libraries into the vehicle. They can also use their smart phones and the system's Bluetooth connectivity to access Pandora, and Stitcher Internet radio and navigation. Navigation directions downloaded through a smart phone is displayed on the screen. When the vehicle is not moving, users can project video and even personal photo albums onto the screen from their phone.

Transferring the turbocharged 1.4-liter engine's 200Nm of torque to the front wheels is either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

"The new Chevrolet Sonic RS pushes Chevrolet's performance heritage in a new direction, for a new generation of drivers," said Chris Perry, vice president of global Chevrolet marketing. "It takes the Sonic's great design and latest connectivity features and combines them with a more performance-oriented look and feel."
