Hyundai sales surge on passenger-car demand

i10, Accent and Elantra FTW!

Hyundai February sales

The popularity of the i10, Accent and Elantra gave Hyundai a boost in February sales while the brand's light-commercial-vehicle sales are on the slow side.

Data from Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI) showed that passenger-car sales of the Korean carmaker grew 149 percent to 1,695 units in February 2012 versus the same month last year.

This growth was enough to offset Hyundai's 21-percent decline in light-commercial-vehicle sales last month when only 674 units rolled out of showrooms.

Hyundai's February sales stood at 2,369 units, bringing the company's first two-month sales up 47 percent to 4,522 units.

HARI expects positive growth to continue given positive factors in the Philippine market that are expected to support car sales.

"We anticipate our strong sales performance to be sustained by favorable consumer outlook, the introduction of new models and consistent brand-promotion efforts," said Hyundai president and chief executive Ma. Fe Perez-Agudo.

The Korean carmaker's new-model introduction this year kicks off with the launch of the Hyundai Eon at the Manila International Auto Show that will open on March 29.

Other cars that are expected to be launched by Hyundai this year are the Genesis Coupe, the Veloster and the new Santa Fe.
