After holding the Asian staging of the Shell Eco-marathon at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia for the past four years, the event will now be held in the heart of Manila from 2014 to 2016.
"The spirit of the Shell Eco-marathon is really bringing people together and helping each other to solve the global energy challenge," said Shell Malaysia chairman Iain Lo during the handover of the annual event's hosting duties to the Philippines.
The 2014 Shell Eco-marathon Asia in Manila also serves as a milestone for Shell Philippines as it marks the 100th year "of the global leader in power, energy and gas technology in the Philippines."
"As Shell aims to meet the world's future energy needs with a diversified energy mix and cleaner energy, Shell enjoins consumers and businesses to use energy better, to do more with less, and make energy conservation and sustainable mobility a way of life," said Shell Philippines chairman Edgar Chua.
For the next three years, the Shell Eco-marathon Asia will be run around Rizal Park, with the entries being judged by a panel of technical experts.
Partnering with Shell Philippines as the host of the Shell Eco-marathon Asia are the Department of Tourism and the Manila Ocean Park.
"We are looking forward to a three-year experience that will definitely make participants understand why it's more fun in the Philippines," Chua added, borrowing the popular slogan of the DOT.
With our hometown advantage, let's hope we see one of our local teams finally top this fuel-economy competition.
