Well, would you look at that

The current variant of the Mitsubishi Montero Sport recently underwent the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asia (ASEAN NCAP) crash test, and it received top ranks on all fronts.

The Montero Sport received a 15.29 score out of 16.00 for adult occupant protection, which earned it a five-star rating (four stars for variants without electronic stability control). It also earned a 76% score for child occupant protection, which nets a four-star rating. The variant tested was from Thailand, so it's the same unit that we see in our local showrooms.

The ASEAN NCAP test is done by strapping in crash test dummies to the front seats. The vehicle is crashed into a barrier at 64kph, and sensors in the test dummies then gather data to assess potential human injuries.

This isn't the first time that the Montero Sport has earned top marks for safety. About a year ago, the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) also gave it a five-star safety rating. So despite all the controversy, it would seem that Mitsubishi placed a premium on safety when it designed the midsize SUV.

The Montero Sport is available with an array of safety features, including forward collision mitigation, ABS brakes, a reinforced steel skeleton, and seven SRS airbags.
