Mitsubishi Motors Philippines recently held a press conference at one of the usual five-star hotels reserved for big announcements. While it wasn’t earth-shattering news, the information conveyed had very important implications for the automotive industry.
You might have heard about the government’s Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS). Basically this aims to resuscitate our car industry to its former glory, before the Marcos administration wrecked the economy. CARS will be done through incentives and fiscal support. And one company already set to implement the program is the carmaker that never left even during our country’s lowest times—Mitsubishi.
Last June 2016 the Department of Trade and Industry approved MMPC’s application to join CARS. And in October this year, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation Chairman Osamu Masuko signed a letter of intent witnessed by President Rodrigo Duterte confirming both parties’ commitment to CARS. All in all, Mitsubishi sank P4.3 billion in this project.
So in January 2017, the Japanese brand will begin manufacturing the Mirage and the Mirage G4 in its Laguna plant. To make cars, Mitsubishi will need parts—locally sourced components, of course. At the press event we attended, MMPC honored the 25 suppliers who will help it bring its products closer to the Philippines market.
In the end, this move will create more jobs both for MMPC and its suppliers. A total of 500 extra workers have already been hired to prepare for the local Mirage production, and more will be needed when the stamping plant goes online in early 2018.
