With the Department of Public Works and Highways implementing the next stage of the Magallanes Interchange's repair after Holy Week, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has appealed to the Department of Transportation and Communications that a portion of the Philippine National Railways line adjacent to the road junction be used temporarily to reroute traffic.
In its appeal, the MMDA, together with the DPWH, asked the DOTC for temporary access to the PNR's northbound and southbound ramps "to relieve motorists of the impending traffic congestion brought about by the Magallanes Interchange closure." The request to the DOTC was supposedly made following the denial of a prior request to the PNR.
"With the upcoming repair of the Magallanes Interchange for 24 consecutive days, there is an urgent need to look for an alternative route," said MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino. "We cannot allow a monstrous gridlock to happen around the Magallanes Interchange."
