Pixar releases first Cars 2 teaser

Lightning McQueen to strike again
by Vernon B. Sarne | Oct 22, 2010

Finally! Five years after the original Cars was released to global audiences, the much-awaited sequel Cars 2 is hitting movie theaters next year (summer in the US; around July in the Philippines). The innovative Pixar Animation Studios--now owned by The Walt Disney Company--has just released the first official teaser trailer for the long overdue installment.

Why the long wait? Well, aside from the fact that making a full-length computer-animated film these days is not entirely child's play, Pixar in recent years has also been busy coming out with other blockbuster releases, including Ratatouille (2007), WALL-E (2008), Up (2009), and Toy Story 3 (2010). That and the fact that Pixar seems to be in collusion with toymaker Mattel to milk the character list of the original Cars for all it is worth.

Anyway, in the 30-second teaser video, Pixar narrates: "The most advanced technology...the most exotic locations...the most dangerous assignments...next summer...get ready to roll with the world's newest secret agents..." Then just when you expect either Tom Cruise or Will Ferrell to materialize on the screen hanging from some high ceiling, security infrared lights zoom in on...Lightning McQueen and best buddy Mater.

Looks like a much more adventurous plot this time compared to the first one. And presumably a host of new characters, too. Which only means more expenses for diehard collectors of the Cars 1:55 die-cast models. Damn! We're not even done completing the first line and here comes the second one. Nicely done, Pixar and Mattel.
