Mitsubishi has confirmed that it will run an Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicle at the 2014 Asia Cross Country Rally under the T1.3 4x4 Electric class. This will be the second time the Japanese carmaker will run the vehicle at the event following its participation last year where it finished in 17th place.
To be staged from August 9 to 15 through a course that will take the participants from Pattaya in Thailand to Phnom Penh in Cambodia, the 2014 Asia Cross Country Rally will see the Outlander PHEV cover 2,200km while encountering "a grueling test of all-terrain performance and durability as it requires competitors to conquer mountains, forests, swamps and river crossings."
According to Mitsubishi, the Outlander PHEV rally car will use competition suspension and reinforced mountings to raise its ground clearance and improve its all-terrain performance. Its S-AWC integrated vehicle dynamics control system will also be tuned for competition use to deliver better traction. Other modifications include the fitting of a roll cage and underbody skid plate; the use of a lighter engine hood, rear gate and interior parts; additional sealing; and a snorkel for water crossings.
