Seatbelt defect prompts Toyota to recall Yaris units

Toyota Motor Corp. announced a worldwide recall of the Yaris due to a seatbelt defect.

The Japanese automaker said the seatbelt pretensioner in the subcompact hatchback could ignite a sound-proofing foam pad in the Yaris' B-pillar in severe frontal collissions.

While only two cases have so far been reported, Toyota said it was only prudent to initiate the recall.

Toyota said the recall program involves more than 1.35 million US-made units of the Yaris built from January 2005 to April 2008.

The Yaris was introduced by Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. (TMPC) in the country in March 2007.
