The Senna name once again joins Lotus as Bruno Senna, nephew of legendary Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna, has been drafted by Lotus Renault to race alongside Vitaly Petrov, in effect taking over Nick Heidfeld's race seat.
"The Senna name is a reason for me to take great pride; I'm really very proud to be related to Ayrton. It's a great inspiration for me to have the surname, and thinking about him and his career always provides fond memories for me. The pressure is there, the demand is there, and the comparisons will always be there. But, at the same time, it has always been that way so I've learned how to cope with it and it has made me a more complete driver," the younger Senna said in an interview shortly after being given the race seat.
The younger Senna first joined Formula 1 in the 2010 season by driving for Hispania Racing where his highest-ever finish was in 14th place. For the 2011 season, Senna was designated as Lotus Renault's test and reserve driver, making him the de facto choice to replace Heidfeld after the latter was dropped by the team earlier this week for undisclosed reasons.
The Senna name was first associated with Lotus when Ayrton drove for the team for three seasons, from 1985 to 1987. In only his second race for the team in what was only his second season in Formula 1, Senna captured his first pole position which he then converted to his first victory in a very wet Portugese Gran Prix. It was during his three seasons in Lotus that Senna showed everyone he was a force to be reckoned with before he claimed the first of his three drivers' title with McLaren in the 1988 season.
