Construction of an undersea tunnel to connect Cebu and Lapu-Lapu has been proposed to ease traffic between the two cities.
The 500-meter undersea tunnel will provide a new route to help facilitate local and foreign trade, commerce and tourism, said Cebu City Rep. Rachel Marguerite Del Mar. The solon proposed the construction through House Bill 192.
"There is the imperative need for additional access routes from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to downtown area and the southern cities and municipalities of the province," Del Mar said. "This project may appear ambitious but this is the solution to the traffic situation in the city."
Del Mar said the full economic development of Cebu City and Cebu's municipalities has become a matter of national concern.
"Because of this, necessary complementary infrastructure facilities must be in place and in top shape,” she added. “And any infrastructure strategy must consider the expanded and accelerated economic growth of the area."
Del Mar noted how the existing road network and bridges between the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu will soon exceed their capacity. She added that constructing a third bridge between the two cities may no longer be feasible as it may hamper the entry of international sea carriers to Cebu City’s port.
