The subcompact crossover class is easily one of the most competitive segments out there. As buyers demand more for their mobility needs, it’s not enough that a car carries a reasonable price tag.

For those shopping in this segment, Suzuki has the answer. It’s the all-new Suzuki Fronx, and it’s a small crossover that’s big on ideas.

On the outside

With its coupe-like styling combined with a strong SUV character, the Fronx represents Suzuki’s bold design direction that’s made to stand out. It’s a study of form and function in one neat package, with garnishes that are designed to protect the bodywork and a pair of roof rails for even more practicality.

The Fronx is available in three variants, namely: GL, GLX Hybrid, and SGX Hybrid with Suzuki Safety Support. But regardless of trim level, all variants get LED illumination and 16-inch alloy wheels shod in 195/65 R16 tires. The top-spec SGX Hybrid further differentiates itself from the rest of the lineup with a two-tone body and alloy wheels finished in dark gray.

Plush and premium-feeling materials greet those who open the doors of the Fronx. The smart and modern cabin features a two-tone theme with a black-on-burgundy combination. It also features soft and padded touch points for a more upmarket feel.

The interior isn’t short on convenience features, either. Footwell lights in the front area aid ingress and egress, while the rear air-conditioning vents keep things cool at the back. Speaking of cooling, automatic climate control is standard in the GLX Hybrid and SGX Hybrid.

There are two powertrain choices for the Fronx. The GL gets a 105hp, 138Nm 1.5-liter engine with variable valve timing, mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox. Meanwhile, the GLX and the SGX are equipped with hybrid technology, further enhancing fuel efficiency and power response. This electrified version produces 101hp and 135Nm of torque, delivered to the wheels by a six-speed automatic transmission.

Big on tech and safety

The SGX variant comes equipped with features to make life behind the wheel even easier. There’s a multi-view 360-degree camera, a heads-up display, and wireless charging. On the GLX and SGX variants, there’s a nine-inch touchscreen with capacitive controls as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, while a color multi-information display comes standard across the range.

The Fronx uses the Heartect platform that allows the chassis to be both light and rigid, ensuring a high level of passive safety to keep occupants unharmed in a collision. All variants also benefit from six airbags, hill-hold control, stability control, and anti-lock brakes.

Move up to the SGX and you also get Suzuki Safety Support, which comprises advanced driver-assist systems that help prevent collisions from happening in the first place. These include autonomous emergency braking via Dual Sensor Brake Support II (DSBS II), blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning and prevention, lane–keep assist, weaving alert, automatic high beam, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Suzuki Fronx starts at P1,059,000 for the GL. The hybrid variants are priced at P1,219,000 for the GLX (P1,229,000 for the two-tone) and P1,299,000 for the SGX. Now that you know more about this brand-new model, now would be a good time to take one for a test drive.
