We all have that one car that we really connect with. It doesn’t matter how fast or powerful, how rare, or how popular it is. Regardless of what other people think about it, we feel like that specific car calls to every fiber of our being.

That’s probably what Macoy Averilla feels about his 1993 Honda Prelude. It’s probably one of the most eye-catching project cars in the local car scene right now. That said, unlike most old Hondas in the Philippines, this two-door coupe is quite underrated. Unappreciated, even.

To be fair, this model is a rare sighting because the older versions of the Prelude were never sold in the Philippines. But even if it were, it isn’t like the EG and EK Civics that Honda boys have continued to love over the decades, hence the unpopularity. It isn’t fast, nor is it the go-to platform for tuning. If anything, it’s almost like the antithesis of a ’90s Honda car. But Macoy loves it. Unapologetically.

Macoy’s Prelude is a fourth-generation example that’s been beautifully and faithfully restored. It has a 2.2-liter H-Series DOHC engine with VTEC, which was turning out to be quite a big thing back in the day. The engine has been kept mostly stock, with just a few modifications evident in the engine bay. Including the nice Mugen oil cap, which I still think adds a few horses when equipped.

The interior has also been kept old-school, with a 1DIN stereo with a CD player mounted on the center console. The dash is original, albeit with some retrofitting for the installed JBL speakers. This being a USDM model, the instrument cluster has ‘mph’ labeled on the gauges. It does still have a ‘kph’ display, but on a smaller inner gauge. There are also a few indicator lights and gauges that we don’t see in our usual Honda cars here in the Philippines.

Now, what makes Macoy’s Prelude and his relationship with it so special is the story behind it. It was an integral part of his childhood, which is why to this day, he has a profound affinity for it. It currently sits in his garage alongside another Honda—his FL5 Civic Type R—and we know for a fact that these two will be for keeps.

Anyway, let Macoy himself tell you the story of his Honda Prelude. Click play on the embedded video below to see more. Scroll on further for more photos of his beautiful car as well.
