How often should I change my wiper blades?

How do I choose from the hundreds of available wiper blades in a car accessories store? Do I need a mechanic to do this for me?

Ideally, you would want to change your wiper blades after every summer or just before rainy season starts. The blades wear over time and baking in the sun after summer makes them less pliable than they ought to be, making the surface of the blades which contact your windshield rougher and allowing them to catch dust and other small particles which may scratch your glass.

Alternatively, you can also wait until they start streaking on your glass before you change them if you don\'t want to change them that often. Given that wiper blades are relatively inexpensive compared to a windshield, it makes good sense to change them before they scratch your windshield.
