Hanging with the Cartistics Auto Club (Part 5 of 9)

There is something about the work-in-progress look that I find really sexy, and this example just oozes with character. All the Cartistics rides are beautiful, but I couldn't stop staring at this Sprinter that belongs to Rene Isaguirre. The paint is bubbling in places, weld and burn marks are all over the fenders where the custom-made replica flares are attached, and there are sections that are rough and aged. Yet, all of the trim chrome trim is complete, it has the proper accessories for the time, and the rims are nice and shiny. Rene kept the emblems in a safe place, for now. "I have a 1978 Galant Sigma, but I like the Toyota. Ang ganda, 'no? Maliit lang na pwede pang karera," he says. Don Savet and company restored the engine which is a 1400, first generation T. 13x8 AP Racing wheels all around, and they look great. Notice how a nice, clean, set of wheels can set off the looks of car regardless of its state? It reminds me of how I don't mind wearing wrinkled clothes as long as my shoes are clean (and stylish!). This is a really cool surprise. The interior or Rene's sprinter has all of the original bits (except for the Nardi steering wheel). The embossing on the vinyl seats look excellent. A note to those who want to re-upholster their beaten up seats: make sure that you save these bits from being thrown away. If possible retain them. That's what I plan to do with the seats of my wagon. Here's a shot of the Sprinter's handbook, and Rene's period-correct ID. The guys from Cartistics get a big kick out of this.
