Last weekend at San Diego Comic Con, Apple TV unveiled the trailer for Matchbox: The Movie. Yup, a movie about the Matchbox die-cast cars you probably used to have as a kid. The upcoming film is billed as an ‘action-packed, globe-trotting adventure’ promising plenty of vehicular stunts.
Leading the cast is retired WWE superstar John Cena, supported by an ensemble cast featuring Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Arturo Castro. The film is directed by Sam Hargrave, who previously served as a stunt coordinator for several Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.

Certainly feels like a Fast and Furious spinoff, right? It doesn’t help that Cena showed up in the 2022 installment titled F9 as Vin Diesel’s estranged brother, but I digress. In the Matchbox movie, Sean Walker (Cena) is a super spy working for the CIA who returns to his hometown to reunite with his childhood friends. No points for guessing what their favorite toys were as kids.

Unfortunately, trouble finds both Walker and his friends, involving them all in an international plot revolving around a case of missing nuclear warheads. Cue the fast cars, gun-fu choreography, and CGI explosions.
Oh, and plenty of scenes conspicuously featuring Matchbox cars, of course. In the trailer, the friends mention pulling off stunts like they used to do with their toys back in the day, so there’s the connection in case you were looking for it.
What’s next? A Hot Wheels-themed rom-com? A Tomica coming-of-age anime? For better or for worse, all of these are on the table if the Matchbox movie does well.
