Woah, a Transformers x Fast and Furious collab?

Well, not officially. Chinese toy company Newage recently released pictures of its upcoming release named S02 Drift, featuring a Nissan Skyline GT-R vehicle mode. It comes in five different colors, each with slightly different robot modes. The silver one with blue stripes is, of course, a clear reference to Paul Walker’s Nissan Skyline in 2 Fast 2 Furious.

The toy’s designers did an impressive job at capturing the car’s profile and details. Usually, these toys are made with the robot mode in mind first, leading to weird and inaccurate proportions for ther vehicle modes. Newage, being one of the premier transforming toy companies, has managed to nail both the robot and vehicle mode, as you’ll see later below.

Tell me more about who’s making these.

In the transforming toy hobby, Newage is known as a third party company. In other words, it doesn’t have permission from Hasbro, Takara, or any other company to create toys inspired by their respective franchises. Naturally, Nissan didn’t sign off on using the R34 as a vehicle mode, either.

Aside from loose copyright restrictions in China generally making things easier, these third party companies also strictly avoid using logos on their products. So no Transformers insignias or Nissan badges on these toys, as you may have noticed.

Fair enough, but walk me through the robot mode now.

Transformed into robot mode, these guys stand at just 4 inches, or around 10cm tall. This lets it fit in with other ‘Legends’ scale Transformers action figures, one of the more popular figure sizes among collectors. Despite the small size, they have plenty of points of articulation, making them very easy to pose.

A handful of Transformers characters are represented in these robot modes. The silver 2F2F R34 is a reinterpretation of Blurr from Generation 1, while the one in Bayside Blue turns into Drift from the live-action movies. The black, white, and red cars also transform into Drift from the Transformers comics continuity, depicting the character at different points of his story arc.

Alright, I’m sold, how much do they go for?

Newage hasn’t specified a price point or release date for these toys yet. However, fans are estimating a sticker price between $80 to $90, or around P5,000 to P5,500 each. Steep, but this is a specialty collector’s toy, after all. That said, rumors are circulating of an official Transformers x Fast and Furious collaboration on the way within the year—also featuring an R34 Skyline alt mode for one of the figures.
