TopGear.com.ph Philippine Car News - 1.3-liter Skyactiv-G is first of next-generation Mazda engines to hit the market

The first of Mazda's next-generation engine that will carry the Japanese brand's Skyactiv technologies will soon hit the market as the Skyactiv-G 1.3-liter direct-injection gasoline engine.

According to Mazda, this particular engine has a high compression ratio of 14.0:1, which is high for a mass-produced gasoline engine and is very efficient even under high load at low rpm. To get around engine knocking, which is an unavoidable issue with conventional high-compression engines, the Skyactiv-G mill carries a host of new technologies like piston cavities that are specially designed to support ideal combustion and multi-hole injectors that enable precise fuel injection control.

Other features of the Skyactiv-G 1.3-liter engine are:

*  Mazda's first dual sequential valve timing system that, in combination with the high compression ratio, achieves an unconventional cycle of extremely delaying the closure of intake valves to improve efficiency;
Compact combustion chambers that have a longer stroke for better efficiency;
*  Piston cavities that are specially designed to support ideal combustion;
30-percent less mechanical friction, thanks to a narrower crankshaft, new roller followers and low-tension piston rings that also reduce oil consumption;
*  Various countermeasures to prevent knocking, including a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system;
*  An updated version of Mazda's innovative idling stop system that operates with a higher frequency, requires less fuel to restart, and achieves a smoother restart resulting in an eight percent improvement in fuel economy; and
*    A lightweight and highly rigid aluminum alloy engine block.

Mazda added that with its unique "i-stop" idling stop system and the continuously variable transmission (CVT), the Skyactiv-G 1.3-liter engine can achieve a fuel economy of 30 kilometers-per-liter under Japan's 10-15 mode test cycle.

Mazda hopes to debut its next-generation 1.3-liter Skyactiv-G engine in the facelifted Mazda 2, which is scheduled to be launched in June.
