The BYD Seal 5 DM-i is a relatively new nameplate in the Philippines. It debuted locally in November 2024, but as of today, we already have a completely refreshed model.
The new Seal 5 DM-i launches with a more Sealion 6-like hood, featuring that signature sloping nose and angled headlights. With that, it now looks more akin to the fully electric Seal Performance, but with a simpler overall impression.

However, the real changes are in performance. While it still retains BYD’s plug-in hybrid DM-i setup, it has somehow squeezed in a lot more range and a smaller battery.

Both the Essential and Dynamic variants now get a 7.42kWh battery, which is technically a downgrade from the 8.3kWh pack on the previous-generation Seal 5. Paired with a single electric motor and a 1.5-liter generator, the new setup claims up to 55km of pure electric driving and a combined range of 1,600km. That is a steep improvement over the old Seal 5’s 1,240km range.
Moreover, the new Seal 5 has 161hp and 210Nm of torque on tap. BYD has also omitted a premium variant on this release, with marginal improvements between the basic Essential trim and the slightly improved Dynamic configuration. The same driver aids are standard for both variants, with a rearview camera, rear parking sensors and non-adaptive cruise control.

A 10.1-inch infotainment screen is also used by both trims, along with an 8.8-inch digital panel and a four-speaker system. Mainly, those who opt for the Dynamic variant will get leather upholstery—instead of fabric—and additional side-curtain airbags.
The Seal 5 DM-i was impressive then, and it is shaping up to be even more interesting today. We’ll be sure to get behind the wheel soon and share our first impressions.
