The DeLorean Motor Company has announced it will officially compete in the upcoming Airspeeder International Series—a flying car racing tournament. We can already hear Marty McFly screaming, “You built a flying car...out of a DeLorean!?”
Yes, Mr. McFly, they sure did. And it seems like Back to the Future did play a part. “People have pictured a DeLorean in the sky for 40 years,” said Cameron Wynne, DeLorean chief brand officer. “We decided it was time to stop picturing it.”

Sadly, the DeLorean flying car will not look like Doc Brown’s DMC-12, but an aircraft with four propellers. As with Airspeeder regulations, DeLorean has built an electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle called the Mk3C. Yup, this sucker is electric, not nuclear.

It will also be equipped with artificial intelligence to bolster its safety system. And that’s about all we know about DeLorean’s flying car. More details are set to be revealed soon, as the tournament will kick off in November.

Eagerly, DeLorean is already looking forward to next year’s tournament, as students from the University of California, the University of California, Berkeley, and the Georgia Institute of Technology are set to join its team.
Ultimately, the competition aims to push the needle for flying cars and other accompanying technologies. Those include AI-enabled aviation and more advanced flight control. DeLorean will be competing against teams from all over the world as it aims to clinch the inaugural championship.
