In December, GAC Motor Philippines previewed two models it was set to launch locally this year. One of those, the Alphard-rivaling M8 van, has already made its official debut. This time, the carmaker is launching another people mover: the GAC M6 Pro MPV.

Seven-seaters are popular among Filipino buyers in need of passenger space and the occasional cargo-hauling capability. The M6 Pro sits above the subcompact-sized models under this general category in terms of dimensions, but it also undercuts compact MPVs in terms of pricing. Let’s take a closer look to see everything this vehicle has to offer.

Variants and prices

GAC M6 Pro

The local M6 Pro is available in two trim levels, both powered by the same engine. Here are the variants and prices:

  1. GAC M6 Pro GS – P1,230,000
  2. GAC M6 Pro GL – P1,598,000

We’ll give you some of the other pricing info you’re probably about to look up: In the compact MPV class, the turbopetrol Hyundai Custin starts at P1.77 million, while the non-hybrid Toyota Zenix is priced at P1.67 million. Among the smaller seven-seaters, the Honda BR-V tops out at P1.39 million for the fully-loaded variant, while the Mitsubishi Xpander starts at P1.128 million and goes all the way to P1.328 million for the Cross. Both the BR-V and the Xpander pack 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engines.

The M6 Pro is covered by a sales warranty for the first five years or 150,000km, whichever comes first.

Exterior

This vehicle may not have quite as dramatic a front end as the bigger M8 or the sporty aesthetics of its Emkoo and GS3 Emzoom stablemates, but its shape and overall design are appropriate for a seven-seat daily driver. That’s not to say it looks bland—the front end wears a rather imposing grille outlined with chrome and flanked by matrix LED headlamps. Sharp contours outline the faux intakes on either side of the bumper. At the rear, an LED light bar connects the taillights.

The headlights, by the way, are equipped with automatic height adjustment, high beam assist, and a follow-me-home function. The wheels are 16-inch alloys. There are three body colors available: Crystal White, Peacock Blue, and Elegant Black.

Interior

Inside, the black-and-red cabin boasts the 2-2-3 seating configuration that’s typical for higher-spec vehicles in this segment, meaning the second row gets captain chairs. These middle seats may be fully-reclined and can also be slid back for more legroom.

In the third row, three-across seating will most likely be tolerable for short distances only; if occupants have to stay there for extended periods, it’s best to limit them to just two people. With the rearmost bench folded down, cargo space expands to 1,100 liters.

The front passenger seat gets four-way manual adjustment, while the driver’s seat features six-way power adjustment to help you find the best driving position. Ahead of the steering wheel is a seven-inch LCD instrument cluster that flows seamlessly into the 10.25inch multimedia touchscreen.

Engine and specs

GAC M6 Pro

As mentioned earlier, there’s only one engine option for the M6 Pro: a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission in both variants. Peak output figures are 174hp and 270Nm of torque.

GAC has not yet released fuel-consumption figures, which buyers in this segment do take into account given the intended use for this type of vehicle. We’ll let you know the numbers we get once we’re able to take this MPV out for a proper test drive.

Extra features

GAC M6 Pro

The aforementioned 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen supports Apple CarPlay. For Android users, smartphone connectivity is limited to Bluetooth. The display also shows the surround-view camera feed to improve visibility when parking.

We’ve seen a comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assist technology in GAC’s other offerings, and there’s a solid lineup of safety features here as well. The M6 Pro is equipped with adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane-keep assist, integrated cruise assist, traffic-jam assist, and traffic-sign recognition, among others. Hill-start and hill-descent control is also standard, as is an electronic parking brake with auto-hold.

We’ll update this story once we get more info on each variant. What do you think of the GAC M6 Pro so far? Is the overall package worth the asking price, and how does it compare—as far as specs go—to the popular picks in its segment?
