Mention the name John Cooper Works and the image of a small, three-door Mini ready for the racetrack comes to mind. But with the popularity of the compact crossover, the British performance division must have deemed it wise to roll out a sporty compact to please enthusiastic racers who wish to do a bit of all-weather traveling once in a while. Enter the new Mini John Cooper Works Clubman.
The very first model of its kind, the JCW Clubman possesses the trademark four side door, two swing-out rear door design that has made the largest Mini a hit among the brand faithful; those buyers that want practicality yet still desire a bit of uniqueness. Being a JCW variant, however, this one is differentiated by large air vents, aerodynamic trims pieces, air curtains and air breathers, a JCW logo on the grille, side scuttles, and a Rebel Green paint scheme.
Inside, a whole host of comfort, convenience, and safety features abound. The large touchscreen display keeps the driver and occupants connected to the world. You’ve got camera-based cruise control, pedestrian and collision warning, and high-beam assistance, among others. And of course, five passengers, including the driver, will travel in the utmost comfort while still having fun.
This ease of movement is made possible thanks to the 2.0-liter four-cylinder motor with Mini TwinPower turbo. This makes for a robust 231hp powering all four corners via a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox, and Mini’s ALL4 all-wheel drive system. All that extra traction gives the not-so-little Mini a zero to 100kph time of 6.3 seconds—a real scorcher in this class of vehicle.
The John Cooper Works Clubman is the Mini for the family man that wishes to please the wife and kids, yet may want to indulge in his rally fantasies on the weekend. It’s the kind of life we wouldn’t mind living.
