MG is determined to be one of the top brands when it comes to electrification. At the moment, there’s a good mix of pure electric and electrified models from the brand. Of course, it would like to expand its green car portfolio, and there’s a new global model that could make its way here.
Introduced earlier this year was the MG ES5, and it’s confirmed to be offered outside of its home market. It appears that Australia will be the first export market for this model that’s close to us. A regional debut sounds promising, though.

The ES5 is the successor to the ZS EV. But unlike the ZS EV, this model rides on a dedicated battery-powered platform instead of an ICE-based vehicle adapted for electric power. In this case, the ES5 rides on the same chassis as the MG 4.
While classified as a compact crossover SUV, its size slots somewhere in between models like the RAV4 and Yaris Cross. As it’s based on the MG 4, the ES 5 is rear-wheel drive. There is no all-wheel drive option, at least for now. That said, it is possible given that its platform-mate is available with it.

Now, for the important part, the powertrain. There are two battery packs on offer, namely 49kWh or 62kWh. That gives it the same capacity options as the MG4. But regardless of battery size, the ES5’s single electric motor puts out 168hp and 250Nm. As for range, MG claims 425km for the 49kWh model and 525km for 62kWh versions.
It remains to be seen if the MG ES5 will land in the Philippines. That said, we wouldn’t be too surprised if it makes an appearance in Southeast Asia given MG’s popularity in the region.
