Is the price competitive enough?

Hyundai Veloster

Taking center stage at Hyundai's booth in the 2016 Manila International Auto Show is this orange turbocharged Veloster. Hyundai Asia Resources, the official distributor of the Korean brand in the country, is offering only one variant of said vehicle.

The price? An enticing P1.548 million. This is P88,000 cheaper than the lowest-variant Toyota 86. And you get to save P132,000 if you choose this over the Mazda MX-5. We mention the two Japanese models because the Veloster is positioned by Hyundai as a sports car.

Powered by a 1.6-liter T-GDI engine (the US-spec one) mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the Veloster produces 201hp and 264Nm. The 2.0-liter 86 has 197 horses and 205Nm, while the MX-5 packs just 158hp and 200Nm.

Inside the Veloster, leather seats await the driver and three passengers (only the driver gets a power-adjustable seat, though). When behind the wheel, the driver feels in control with paddle shifters, and is guided by a rear-view camera, which shows its footage through a seven-inch LCD touchscreen multi-information display. Like most modern cars, this Hyundai lets you enjoy music in various ways--via a built-in CD/MP3 player, auxiliary input, USB or Bluetooth.

As for safety and security features, you get six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability program, hill-start assist, burglar alarm and immobilizer.

The Veloster is available in our market in seven colors: Sleek Silver, White Crystal, Dazzling Blue, Phantom Black, Sunflower, Vitamin C and Veloster Red.
