TopGear.com.ph Philippine Car News - Chevrolet launches Cruze hatchback--in Europe

Chevrolet revealed the production version of the Cruze hatchback in March at the Geneva International Motor Show. After almost six months, the American carmaker has finally launched the car, with the European market being the first to get its hands on the five-door Cruze.

While the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback is similar to the sedan from the B-pillar forwards, everything rearwards is different, particularly the fast roofline that terminates in the roof-mounted spoiler and the subtle crease in the pillar, which runs to the base of the rear screen. According to Chevrolet, this will "reinforce the visual expression of speed." The taillight cluster, of course, is also different and contributes to the upmarket appearance of the Cruze.

Inside, the hatchback Cruze retains the same dual cockpit as the sedan, with its integrated center stack that flows into the center console. Despite the sloping roofline, rear passengers enjoy 974mm of headroom while the luggage area's capacity is a generous 413 liters which can then be expanded to 883 liters if the 60:40-split rear seats are folded forward.

For the European market, three engines--two petrol and one diesel--will be offered.

The 1.6- and 1.8-liter petrol engines have an output of 124hp and 141hp, respectively although both have a claimed fuel mileage of 18.196 kilometers per liter.

A slightly more powerful 2.0-liter turbo diesel mill, similar to the one offered in the Philippine-market Cruze sedan, is also available for the hatchback, producing 163hp and 360Nm of torque. Early next year, a 1.7-liter diesel engine will reportedly be offered for the Cruze hatchback.

According to Chevrolet, all of the aforementioned engines can be combined with either a manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

"We believe that the Cruze hatch will provide us with a great opportunity to extend Chevrolet's presence in the compact segment," said Wayne Brannon, president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe. "If you look at what we achieved with the salon, Chevrolet's best-selling nameplate around the world in 2010, there's every reason to believe that the hatchback, will contribute significantly to Chevrolet's growth in Europe."

The sale of the Cruze hatchback for the European market starts at the end of July.

Do you think it would be wise if Chevrolet Philippines offered the Cruze hatchback to the local market as well?
