Chevrolet produces Spark-centered soap opera

In hopes this will reach a younger market demographic

The young mini-hatchback segment is so competitive these days that carmakers will stop at nothing to capture a bigger slice of it. One of these is Chevrolet Philippines, which actually went so far as to produce a 30-minute, two-episode soap opera around the Spark on Studio 23. Called Sparkada Trip, the marketing-oriented TV show is touted as the first-ever "kotse-serye." The first episode aired on August 14.

The story revolves around five young characters played by upcoming ABS-CBN actors: Xian Lim as Alex Agbayani, the school jock; Helga Krapf as Nora Taylor, the rich Fil-Am girlfriend of Alex; Ketchup Eusebio as George Marquez, the happy-go-lucky funny guy; Charee Pineda as Ynah Filemon, the conservative, soft-spoken role model; and Gee Canlas as Joy Manalastas, the geeky and talkative call-center agent.

The story starts on the day of Alex’s birthday. Alex is expecting a fun-filled day with his girlfriend and friends, only to realize that his girlfriend Nora is missing. Alex then calls his “Sparkada” friends to help him find Nora. The group goes on a roller-coaster adventure as they try to look for Nora. Obviously--because this is a Chevrolet production--the group uses the diminutive but versatile Spark for transportation. As they come close to finding Nora and solving the mystery of her whereabouts, they also discover the many features of the Spark.

The show is clearly aimed at the college set as it airs right after the UAAP basketball games on Studio 23.
