DPWH gears up for typhoon by deploying quick-response teams along national roads

In anticipation of Chedeng
May 25, 2011

The rains of Typhoon Chedeng are seemingly upon us, prompting the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to deploy its Disaster Quick-Response Teams to the identified critical sections on nation roads in Western Visayas, Bicol Region, Cagayan Valley Region and Northern Luzon.

DPWH secretary Rogelio Singson has directed the quick-response team through the respective DPWH regional and district offices to submit to his office a copy of the department's Bureau of Maintenance situational reports on major and secondary national roads and bridges every six hours during calamities "to effect (a) timely and expeditious response."

As a preventive measure, DPWH undersecretary for regional operations Romeo reported that the regional and district offices have already conducted drainage declogging and vegetation-control operations along national highways to prevent flood during the rainy season.

"PAGASA (Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) has already warned that there is a possibility that Typhoon Chedeng may (bring) heavier rains compared to typhoon Milenyo, that's why we must double our efforts to assure the public's safety and to assure immediate rescue and relief operation during calamity," said Singson.
