It may be a few years too late but that apparently will not stop Maserati from joining the sport-utility vehicle (SUV) fray as the Italian carmaker will reportedly debut its concept SUV at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
Using its ties with Fiat, which now owns Chrysler, Maserati is said to be basing its SUV on the recently launched Jeep Grand Cherokee and plans to make it available to the public by 2013, AutoNews.com reported.
Though it will utilize the Grand Cherokee's platform, the Maserati SUV will supposedly have its own body panels, make use of an entirely different interior and be equipped with the carmaker's own 4.7-liter V8 engine that has a 450hp output and pair it to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.
The report added that Maserati could also offer the SUV with a 3-liter V6 diesel but only for the European market.
Do you think it's wise for Maserati to come up with it own SUV? If it does go into production, do you think Formula Sport, the exclusive importer and distributor of Maserati vehicles in the Philippines, should bring one in? Tell us what your opinion is by posting it in the comment box below.
