It's a busy weekend for Filipino racers.
Aside from the ongoing Lotus F1 Experience event this weekend at the Quirino Grandstand and SM Mall of Asia, a team of Filipino racing drivers is flying to the United States to compete in an offshoot of one of that country's most followed spectator sports.
Filipino racing champions will be heading for Charlotte, North Carolina, today, May 4, to compete in the NASCAR Race Experience World Circuit event on May 8 to 9.
In their recent send-off party, the squad--composed of Carlos Anton, Stefano Marcelo, Pia Boren, Michelle Bumgarner and Gaby dela Merced--was all in high spirits about the upcoming competition. All were likewise eager to do well in the race while looking forward to showcasing the Philippine flag in the meet.
According to team leader Carlos Anton, they are slated to train extensively in the three days leading to the event. "I hope it's enough time to get comfy at speed," said the hill-climb and touring car champion. The team will drive 865hp Sprint Cup-spec stock cars as they race against 10 other NASCAR Race-EX participants from various countries. In his appeal to local motorsports aficionados, Anton added, "Pray for us."
Multi-discipline racing champion Mike Potenciano, who was originally part of the lineup, has opted to be on reserve to focus on his election campaign for vice mayor in the city of San Pablo, Laguna. Two-time Philippine National Formula 3 champion Tyson Sy will likewise play reserve driver duties.
