Hyundai has announced that it will debut its first range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) in 2027. At its 2025 CEO Investor Day conference, the Korean carmaker unveiled a five-year roadmap that outlined an overall goal to sell 5.55 million units by 2030.

And out of that total, Hyundai aims for 60% or 3.3 million sales to come from its lineup of electrified vehicles. That includes its hybrid and fully electric variants, the Ioniq series, and eventually its new REEVs. Hyundai expects to have over 18 hybrid models by 2030, but it is unclear if the new powertrain will debut on an all-new vehicle. It could very well be offered as another option on an existing nameplate, much like the Tucson, Santa Fe, and their respective hybrid variants.

However, there is a debate on whether or not REEVs should be classified as hybrid vehicles, as the gasoline engine in the system solely serves as a generator to the battery. Technically, only the battery powers the car’s motor, running on no gasoline. Arguably, the most popular REEVs in the Philippines today come from Chinese carmaker BYD.

For its new REEV, Hyundai is developing a new battery that should be able to deliver EV-like performance, but at half the internal capacity. According to Hyundai, this battery is rated for over 960km of driving.

Once launched in 2027, the REEV is expected to enter the European and US markets first. It is also unclear if it will be manufactured in the US to circumvent tariffs and other trade policies.

At the same time, Hyundai is working on a new midsize pickup and four other vehicles with GM, all of which are set for North and South American releases. Also, at least seven existing models are expected to get performance N variants within the next five years. All in all, it sounds like a comprehensive plan to reach 5.55 million in sales.
